“Red or blue?” Netflix’s hit Korean Drama, Squid Game, quickly became one of their most-watched shows within a week, unwilling to be shaken off the Top 10 in the U.S Today as well as globally. It follows the story of a cast of characters in great debt invited to compete in a series of childhood games to win roughly 38 million USD. As each round continues those who don’t finish sacrifice the money— and their life.
With only nine episodes ranging from half to a full hour-long, it was the public and social media who spread word of the show like wildfire. With apps such as Tik-Tok posting clips of scenes and compilations of the characters, the iconic red suit-wearing guards evoked the hit game Among Us not long after its peak. Even games such as Roblox have created games based on Squid Game’s challenges where people can play with a bit less danger involved for the player; it didn’t take long before everyone heard of it.
The show is offered in four different dubbed languages (besides the original Korean version) such as English, Spanish, French, and German. Subtitles currently offers languages such as English, Spanish, and simplified Chinese. With a rating suggesting it’s targeted for “mature” audiences, the thriller follows through with violence and a decent amount of gore. For the most part, you don’t have to worry about watching it on your living room television, but there is a sex scene in episode 4 and partial nudity for a minute in episode 7.
One of the best traits of Squid Game is its brilliant soundtrack. The recognizable game sounds and music lets the viewers alongside the characters know what’s coming next. There was no forced cohesion as the orchestra played during game rounds making it all the more enjoyable. Korean cinema’s camera work is stunning and well put together, offering a new format of storytelling compared to Western films and shows alike. Through official streaming services, they will be allowed to receive international support as we get to watch as well.
