Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a game with 74 fighters and 100 different stages where players fight in an intense free-for-all. Minecraft character Steve was the part of a $30 DLC including 7 other fighters. Steve has three different alternate skins: Alex, Enderman, and a zombie. Added to the game is an additional map that changes from day to night. When it turns night zombies will spawn in the background and when day returns they burn.
Nintendo didn’t lack in detail for any of the DLC. Steve is described as “one of the most mechanics-heavy characters Smash has ever seen” by YouTube channel IGN. He can mine and craft as the original game intended. To attack he can use a sword, axe, and pickaxe. He mines at the ground and gets resources. What he mines depends on what he is mining on. Mine on a wooden platform like Jungle Japes, he gets wood. Mine on a steel ship like stage Venom, he gets iron. Resources like redstone and diamonds are mined in a set pattern. Mining can upgrade tools with the crafting table. When Steve spawns in he comes with a crafting table. This crafting table can be destroyed by both Steve himself and opponents. Thankfully Nintendo also allows for another one to be summoned by Steve. Upgraded tools increase mining and attack damage.
Mining also allows for crafting. The new Steve character doesn’t have unlimited crafting ability; to keep crafting blocks he has to mine. Placing blocks has multiple uses: blocking an opponents move, getting out of reach of enemy opponents, and blocking opponents from recovering from a fall off the map. These craftable blocks are temporary, and just like his tools they waste resources. Steve additionally has moves where he can place a magma block above him, jump and fall down with an anvil under him, and dash with a minecart. These moves also require mining to perform. Steve’s reliance on mining makes it his primary disadvantage.
Just like Minecraft, Steve has so much potential for the player to unlock. He’s tricky fighter to get a good grasp of his moves, but he rewards some of the most interesting gameplay available in Smash.
