On January 19, 2023 our cardinals soccer boys team headed to Wimberly to compete in a tournament against Fredericksburg and Austin Achieve. They also faced Kerrville on Friday morning. Our cardinal boys were going to be the first to play in the tournament against Fredericksburg. The results were mixed; they tied their first game, lost their second and won their last game.
The first game for our cardinals was against Fredericksburg, at 9 am. After the team arrived and got settled down they started warming up before they had to face the other team. They started doing their drills and practicing their shooting. After the warming up time was over it was time for them to play. The starters were Jorge Hernandez, Kevin Leon, Jose Cardenas, Mateo Hernandez, Omar Castro, James Santiago, Luis Cano, Ernesto Serna. The cardinals took a first-half lead of 3-1, and during the second half scored another goal. The 4 goals were scored by Ricardo Torres, Victor Landin, Jorge Hernandez, and Brian Nieto. But the game ended in a tie, as Fredericksburg was able to score three times in the second half.
At 5 pm, the cardinals played their second game against Austin Achieve. Both teams were warming up and getting prepared for the big game. The cardinals have beaten Austin Achieve every time they’ve played for the past 6 years, but this game changed everything. Austin Achieve was able to break that record that night, and won the game against our cardinals. The cardinals boys looked all over the place in the field; there was not much communication and the team looked messy. Austin Achieve was able to get more possession of the ball and scored 3 goals. Their passing was crisp, and the players were running and getting open to where their communication was clear. Their passing got the cardinals a bit tired and made them get frustrated and annoyed with each other.
The following day, KAC took on Kerrville, and both teams put up a good fight. Both the teams put good pressure on each other. Our cardinals boys scored in the first half with a very nice goal by Jorge Hernandez in the twenty-first minute.
But unlike in game one, the cardinals never got ahead of themselves and kept applying pressure without even thinking about defending. It was clear that Kerrville was fighting hard to tie up the game. Kerrville kept attacking and started to play with more strategy and patience which cost the cardinal boys a bit more trouble. But once again, KAC Coach Eddie Lett knew exactly which players to sub in and sub out in order to not let the team concede a goal, which led to our cardinal boys to end up securing the win with a score of 3-2.
