Austin, Texas is very popular for its rich, diverse food culture. When you think you’ve discovered all the food places, new ones pop up. But with so many restaurants to choose from: which ones are hidden treasures and which ones are a let down?

One hidden treasure we found is a Mexican restaurant called Mi Lindo Michoacan. This restaurant is a family owned and operated Mexican restaurant from Michoacan, Mexico, a town known for its endless flavors, colors, and sensations created by generations of families.

Mi Lindo Michoacan states that: “We provide a unique and gratifying dining experience, where the menu and service complement each other. We always strive to create an uplifting and inviting environment where guests look forward to bringing their friends and family.”

This was confirmed when we entered the restaurant accompanied by vibrant colors and amazing smelling food. We were greeted by a nice and lovely hostess who then sat us down and asked us what we would like to drink. She then offered us appetizers to which we got a queso recommended by her. This was a homemade queso, consisting of roasted peppers and a scoop of guacamole served with chips. We personally thought it was delicious because it tasted like traditional homemade queso.

To drink, we ordered aguas frescas that come in a barrel, and it was our first time seeing a drink served like that. We then ordered our food, which was enchiladas Michoacanas and a fajita mix. The food arrived pretty fast and the server made sure everything was okay. The enchiladas Michoacanas came with six corn tortillas with red enchilada sauce stuffed with mozzarella cheese, and were topped with cabbage/lettuce, tomato, avocado, radish, pickled jalapeños, and more served with fajita de pollo. The fajita mix came with chicken, beef, and shrimp with a side of rice, refried beans, sour cream, and corn tortillas.

The food was delicious and it had great flavors. With this food and great environment, it truly gave us an authentic Mexican experience.

One restaurant famously talked about is The Oasis on Lake Travis. This restaurant consists of Tex-Mex/American food with a diverse option of drinks. This started off as just an idea but blossomed into a very popular place for people from around the world to visit in Austin. It is known as The Sunset Capital of Texas because “Most days, hundreds of guests from all over the world come to see the breathtaking views and (quite possibly) one of the most spectacular sunsets they will ever lay eyes on.” From all the good things we’ve heard about this place, we walked in with high expectations.

Once we got there, we were greeted with a beautiful entrance both from the inside and outside. We waited a few minutes to get to the front desk and were greeted by a hostess who took us to our seats. Once we sat, we looked at the view and realized it was definitely the biggest part of this restaurant. Our server arrived and mentioned that we can access the menu through the QR Code on the table. Looking at the menu, it wasn’t as diverse as we thought it would be.

We got the beef fajitas (with rice, refried beans, guacamole, and cheese), the bacon jam jurger, and the grilled shrimp with the andouille sausage skewers. The food was average and overpriced and we definitely expected more than what we got, especially with the tortillas that came with the beef fajita because they tasted like they were store bought. Regardless, it was nice to have an amazing view of Lake Travis. Walking into the restaurant, we came in very hopeful but we were still satisfied as we walked out.

Remember, overrated does not equal not good, it just means it wasn’t as good as people said it was. If you ever need a place to go with friends, family, or loved ones, please make sure to check out any of those mentioned; Mi Lindo Michoacan or The Oasis at Lake Travis.
