You’ve seen them performing at pep rallies and special events. You’ve seen them in the homeroom slides, holding trophies from the many competitions they’ve won. KAC’s Dance Crew is one of its most accomplished and award-winning student groups. But do you know the team’s history?
Before KAC was established in 2008, the school’s first class of freshmen 8th had to decide on their electives and they suggested dance because it was already required for 6th graders. Dance teacher Jamie Vallejo, who had already been working with them in middle school, decided to make a Spring Show the highlight of the school’s first year. She believed that KAC dancers should start with competition and they were the highlight of the competition. The dance crew found confidence performing in competitions outside of KIPP and it grew from there. Many of the students had already danced, so many came with experience. The dance crew took those kids to competitions where they were comfortable with their bodies. Many of those same students continued dancing at UT and other competitions.
Current students say that the dance crew pushes them to further than they knew they could go. It creates a friendly atmosphere and the dancers enjoy the interactions they have with the rest of the girls. Many describe the being on the team as fun and social, and say that being on Dance Crew lets them be supportive of each other and gives everyone space for creative expression. These impactful bonds–not only with the team, but also with dance itself–allow them to express their individualities to their fullest.

This year, their competitions have been memorable, especially the first competition as it was very exciting because it was their first one. Many of dancers have different opinions about dance topics, such as their favorite type of dance. But they all agree that they want recognition and would love more showcase moments on First Fridays so that they can show off their trophies like the other sports. Their proudest proudest moments with the girls is earning the awards–along with the bonds that got them there in the first place. Their bonds have made their choreographies stronger and more emotional.
They also want the future generations of Dance Crew to have the best experience possible. Vallejo expressed that she wants to take the crew back to colleges to “see what college offers in a social setting.” She wants to show the different types of dance to them. They want to give the experience to those future generations and continue the memories that they have created in this school and competitions, leaving a large impact on the school atmosphere and even creating bonds with people outside of school!
