With the 2022-2023 school year coming to an end, our seniors are preparing and looking forward to their one and only senior prom here at Kipp Austin Collegiate. This time of year is filled with many memorable moments including college decisions, graduation, prom, and the promposals.

During the last First Friday pep rally for seniors, senior Nehemias Tiguila had thoroughly planned a thoughtful promposal for senior Annaie Mijares with the help of KAC’s own dance crew. While gathering help from several friends and clubs, Tiguila was successfully able to convince the dance crew to create and perform a dance with Mijares’ favorite songs.

The week of the pep rally, more and more people started finding out about the plan, causing more worry of Mijares finding out. When the day finally came, everyone was anticipating and looking forward to the long awaited and first promposal of the year. When the dance crew finally took the stage at the KAC gym, they began dancing to Swimming Pools by Kendrick Lamar, to which Mijares excitedly yelled out, “I recommended that song!!” From there the dance crew planned a fake “glitch” in their performance, and changed the song to Lovers Rock by TV girl, creating a walkway for Tiguila to walk out from the crowd and propose his promposal.

Prior to the beginning of the pep rally, Mijares’ close friends arrived early to the gym to save seats, ensuring her to be in the front row, so she can easily walk down to see her promposal. When asked what was going on Mijares’ head at the time, she said, “Oh my god I was like, what the fuck and I was so happy and excited, I didn’t know who it was for.” I think it’s safe to say that she really enjoyed the promposal. As for Tiguila, this is what he had to say: “I was nervous, so nervous that when I woke up I got out of bed and went to brush my teeth and my legs were shaking!”

Although that was one of many promposals, we also have many more to share like the one with seniors Camille Rios and Erik Gonzales, to which Gonzalez carefully planned when he was going to prompose. He planned it on the day that the robotics program, specifically the Steminist team, got their graduation cords. He had every member hold a pink tulip (Rios’ favorite flower) and when she came into the gym they each gave her the flower as they moved out of her way to create a path leading up to the promposal. The path shined with other members using flashlights and revealing Gonzalez holding up a poster asking Rios, “Can we dance under the Moonlight at prom?” as Moonlight by Kali Uchis played in the background, being one of Rios’ favorite songs. In a brief interview she said, “It was like I was in a movie… and I couldn’t help but think of how beautiful it was to the point where it made me tear up.”

In addition to these very sweet promposals, we had a quieter one happen during an art class. The senior couple, Oscar Rodriguez and Jasmin Ortuño, were painting in art, where Oscar just pulled a rock out of nowhere and placed it in front of Jasmin, reading, “I’d be over the moon if you went to prom with me,” and another rock that shows a cow jumping over the moon with stars and a heart. Ortuño said she didn’t know how to feel about it, saying, “It was out of nowhere, but I thought it was really cute!”
