The formation of the yearbook club has taken place to capture the 2023–2024 school year. Halls are walked with photographers, and posters are on the walls encouraging students and teachers to gauge interest in purchasing a yearbook.
What is Yearbook Club?
Yearbook club has the purpose of capturing the 2023–2024 school year to be made into a book that can be kept and viewed whenever one wants to look back on their high school experience and memories. The yearbook club was started and is advised by 9th and 10th grade social worker Alexandra Lawson. In an interview with Lawson, she brought up her experience being a part of photography and the yearbook for her high school experience. So she chose to rise up in taking change to form a club to create a yearbook that captures KAC’s cardinals’ spirit. However, Lawson spoke about how she chose to have the club be more student-based and led, stating, “To see the creative outlets that y’all do when you feel like you have the freedom to come up with ideas.” So in the yearbook club, students have the power to make decisions to express themselves and their classmates in how they want to remember their year.
The yearbook club doesn’t just consist of the simple idea of taking pictures, having a theme, and putting them into a book; instead, there is much more behind the scenes. The club is organized into three different teams: the Business and Managing, Page Developers, and Photography teams. The business and managing team have responsibilities in the finance focus to help raise money and promote yearbooks to be sold throughout the year. The photography team has the role of capturing student life, school events, and sports to be showcased. Lastly is our page development team, which is important because they have the job of creating what and how the yearbook looks and writing about KAC’s student life and spirit. All teams have an editor who is the leader to help lead and support other teammates to help work together and reach the vision of that year’s yearbook.
Who Can Join?
The great thing about the yearbook club is that anyone is able to join. No matter whether you are a freshman or senior, you have the opportunity to become involved in creating, publishing, and promoting that year’s yearbook to show the highlights, lives, and school spirit. In talking about the decision behind why anyone can join, Lawson states, “It was to make it as inclusive and open as possible so we could gauge buy-in” and that it “allows underclassmen to watch yall, learn from you, so they can take it on next year.” So with underclassmen having the ability to participate in the yearbook, they have the advantage and opportunity to learn how they can manage creating theme ideas, and learn about photography or financial skills in publishing and advertising to sell the yearbook.”
Expectations
What can we expect to see in our 2023-2024 yearbook? “We gonna be highlighting the extracurriculars creative arts, and noncore classes. That means band, dance crew, robotics, migration journal, art classes, and electives because that is going to be highlighting school culture, sports, and athletics—huge pieces that represent us and are unique to KAC,” Lawson states. Photographers are roaming hallways or being sent out to take photos to capture KAC’s life, whether it be photos of sports games, school events or dances, students talking and connecting, or one’s accomplishments. So stay photoready, and as Lawson states, “Buy a yearbook; it’s going to be 40 dollars, and the deadline is March 20th to put in your order. But you can start putting in your order as early as today!”
