By Camila Juarez and Miguel Hernandez

Mexico’s 2024 presidential election will take place on June 2, 2024, with the top candidates being Claudia Sheinbaum and Xochitl Galvez. This means Mexico’s next president will most likely be female.

Mexico’s current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), is about to finish his 6 years as president. Now, 3 presidential candidates are fighting to win the presidency. These candidates include Claudia Sheinbaum, Xóchitl Gálvez, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez. The governor of Nuevo Leon, Samuel Garcia, was also running for president but later decided to pull out of the race to return to his post as governor due to controversy regarding his temporary leave. This led to his campaign coordinator, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, replacing him. As the race continues, Mexico’s citizens wonder whether or not the candidates will fulfill their promises.

So, let’s get to know more about the candidates running for the presidency.

Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, is the former Head of Government of Mexico City and one of the top candidates for Mexico’s 2024 election. She was the first Jewish person to be mayor of Mexico City. Like AMLO, she’s a part of the Morena party. Her proposals include further investments in water recycling and treatment plants, finding and developing water sources outside of Mexico City, and subsidizing rainwater collection. She also wants to increase funding and investments in formal public transportation such as bus lines, trains, and cable cars. Additionally, reducing informal transportation systems and enforcing stricter environmental standards for cars.

Xóchitl Gálvez, 61, is the former mayor of Miguel Hidalgo and is also one of the top candidates. She is a part of the Fuerza y Corazón por México party, which is a political alliance formed by three Mexican political parties: the National Action Party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, and the Party of the Democratic Revolutions. She supports more progressive causes, especially on topics such as the environment, LGBTQ+ rights, and abortion. She has been in many headlines and is popular for her down-to-earth personality and humor. She is seen around Mexico City on her bike, and she is not afraid to use profane language when interacting in political circles or with the public. This has allowed her to gain a diverse audience of supporters.

Jorge Álvarez Máynez, 38, is the former deputy of the Congress of Zacatecas and is part of the Citizens’ Movement party. The proposals of Jorge Álvarez Máynez and the Citizen Movement Government program are democratic governance, social policy, and economic reform. His proposals also highlight the demilitarization of public security, the autonomy of the judicial branch, regulation of marijuana use, a universal pension system with a gender perspective, and guarantee access to banking and credit services for citizens. He also wants to provide new textbooks and finance education in study programs.

The official campaign season began on March 1 and is still taking place. Right now, Claudia Sheinbaum seems to be the people’s choice, with Xóchitl Gálvez coming in 2nd and Jorge Álvarez 3rd. Almost 99 million people are expected to vote, and Mexico will have its first female president, making this a landmark election.
