Anticipating their season with excitement, basketball players have started to prepare to continue thriving. As a new year starts, there is more that the girl’s varsity basketball team is bringing in order to win states this season. Throughout the year, they have been practicing and improving their skills as seen through their progress at their games.
I wanted to get an insight into how managing a team felt so I was able to ask one of their managers, Lyzet Moreno, about her perspective and her experience managing this team for the past two years, “I really like it because you can get to know the team and feel part of it, you want the best for them, you get to see their growth and just overall get to be part of the team culture.”
As the season approaches its end, I was able to interview the girl’s basketball coach, Anthony Carrizales, and was able to ask for his insight on how this team has continued to grow, “So I think this year we have amazing leadership, it is important to have good leaders because the team follows and as a result … our team has like stepped up to our leader’s challenges but also to mine…” When interviewing Carrizales I was able to see the love and support that he has for his team due to the genuine answers he would give me, “I tell them all the time, being them is enough, as long as they continue to grow individually like performance wise it’s all that matters … if they can step off the court and know that they tried their best and we improve, at the end of the day that’s all that matters to me…”
I was also able to get some perspective from one of the girls’ varsity captains, Genesis Robles, when asked about how she has made the team at its full potential, Genesis was able to discuss how at the beginning of the year, their team had struggled being in track with their academics and was able to elaborate by stating, “From the start of the season, our captain Aimee Santiago, she and I had been trying to get our team to pass their classes and stay on track both on and off the courts.” When asked how she keeps her team motivated when things don’t turn out the way she had hoped, Genesis stated, “It’s all mentally you know … I feel like it’s the energy and the positivity and the mindset that you bring because obviously emotions get the best out of you and you just can’t let that take over.”
Carrizales was also able to leave some words to those reading by uplifting y’all to support the girl’s varsity basketball team, “We have senior night, come out it’s 2/7(at 6:45), I encourage everybody to come out to senior night it’s … a large event so I encourage the whole school to come out.” We hope to see you there!
