The KAC Cheer Team is one of the many groups that showcase the diverse talent of KAC students through the art of cheerleading. In 2025, the team celebrates five years since its creation, overcoming many challenges to get where they are today. Former Head Coach and Founder Dorianne Santiago, along with dedicated students, started the team to bring something new to KAC and create a space for those passionate about cheer. Despite setbacks, including starting during the COVID-19 pandemic and needing to fundraise as a charter school team, they pushed through. Their hard work and persistence paid off, leading to growth, change, and a legacy that still thrives.
The team’s current routine includes physical activities to warm up properly and avoid injuries, along with perfecting performances. Each member plays an important role in keeping the team balanced and ready. Mikayla Conde and Adriana Castro are the managers, Briseida Alvarado leads as captain, Valeria Trejo supports as co-captain, and Leila Zuniga takes on the assistant manager role. While conflicts occasionally arise, the team tackles issues immediately to maintain a positive environment. Mikayla, a former member, understands the team’s struggles and helps strengthen communication and team bonds. On tough days, members like Mia Murillo and Frida Cortez bring energy and positivity, ensuring practices remain fun and motivating. The team welcomes anyone who’s flexible, dedicated, and has a positive attitude.
The Cheer Team has faced many obstacles but has continued to grow and excel. In 2024, they won their first championship, a proud moment for the team. Now, they’re preparing for their next competition on March 29, 2025, in Houston, practicing daily to deliver their best performance yet. Their first fundraiser of the year raised over $3,000, showing just how determined and capable they are.
Reflecting on the journey, Head Coach Anyssah Johnson shared some advice: “You’re worthy of it. Dedication and consistency will show you who you are. Finding something to ground yourself in—be it cheer or any sport—keeps you motivated and balanced.” She also expressed her gratitude for her time with the team, saying, “I’m grateful for the experience. Everything I’ve done at KIPP has been an experience, and I think cheer has been my favorite one.” Her words capture the spirit of the KAC Cheer Team: resilient, hardworking, and united.
