On March 3rd 2025, The Cardinal Post interviewed senior Manny Lopez about his barber business. Here at Collegiate there are plenty of students earning money in their spare time, but Lopez’s story is one of the most unique.
What inspired you to become a barber ?
Lopez: I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset, and barbering stood out to me as a skill that allows me to be creative while building strong relationships with clients. I was inspired by the idea of providing a service that not only makes people look good but also boosts their confidence.
What skills do you think are the most important?
Precision and attention to detail are key because every client expects a clean, well-executed cut. Good communication skills are also crucial to understanding what the client wants and making recommendations when needed. Lastly, adaptability helps in keeping up with new trends and handling different hair types or styles.
How do you handle difficult clients or hard requests ?
I stay professional, patient, and focused on problem-solving. If a client has a tough request, I break it down, explain what’s possible, and set clear expectations. If a client is unhappy, I listen carefully, make adjustments if needed, and ensure they leave satisfied.
What trends or techniques do you see becoming more popular in men’s grooming?
At the moment the modern mullet seems to be a trending hairstyle, as many young adults seek a clean, presentable look. I myself have had the modern mullet, which I loved.
Can you share a memorable experience when you went above and beyond for a client ?
A senior came in the day before his senior pictures, nervous about how he’d look in the yearbook. He wasn’t sure what style to get, so I helped him choose a clean mid-fade with a sharp lineup. I made sure everything was precise and gave him tips to keep it fresh for the next day. Later, he told me his pictures came out perfect, and that made the extra effort worth it.
Manny Lopez continues to work hard day to day to make sure his schoolwork and barber work are the best possible.
