A Familiar Fright? A New Nightmare? Cardinal Reviewers Take On The The Conjuring

October, 2025

By Kalysa Martinez and Jasmin Del Rio

We have all heard about the famous Conjuring movies and their faithful followers and viewers, but how similar or different are the opinions of someone who is a fan of the movies vs someone who has never seen the movies? In order to find this out we are sharing our own opinions on the latest chapter in the franchise, The Conjuring: Last Rites.

A Familiar Fright (Kalysa’s View)

I’ve seen every Conjuring movie, from the creepy dolls to the haunted houses, and with The Conjuring: Last Rites, it feels like we’re finally at the end of the road. After experiencing the build up of each movie and the continuous addition of layers to the story, I couldn’t help but wonder, does this final chapter still deliver the anticipation and thrills, or does it fall short of the legacy?

Last Rites stays true to what fans expect from the series, blending supernatural horror with moments of emotional intensity. As the film revisits familiar themes of faith, family, and strength, it introduces new threats that heighten the stakes for the Warrens. The movie stays true to its formula, featuring slow builds and big scares that heighten the eerie atmosphere. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson continue to shine as Lorraine and Ed Warren, bringing tenderness to their characters, making the challenges they face feel real. While the film doesn’t bring anything new to the table, it provides fans with the closure they’ve been hoping for.

The film may have been predictable at times, especially the jumpscares, but they still manage to be effective. The movie focuses on the Warrens, putting less emphasis on the haunted family, and the shift in tone adds more emotional complexity to the story.

While the supernatural threat may feel less urgent, this shift allows for a deeper connection with the characters, making their challenges feel more personal. Vera Farmiga’s performance is compelling as she captures both the vulnerability and strength of Lorraine, portraying her as a mother trying to protect her family while dealing with the horrors around them. This change in direction towards a more character driven feel means the scares aren’t as intense as fans might expect, but it brings a more intimate feel to the film.

The Conjuring: Last Rites may not reinvent the formula, but it offers a fitting end to the Conjuring series. With strong performances from Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, and a focus on the Warren family’s personal journey, the film delivers the resolution fans have been waiting for. For those who have followed the franchise, it is a solid final chapter to wrap up their journey.

A New Nightmare (Jasmin’s View)

The movie The Conjuring: Last Rites is the final chapter to these iconic movies. As a first time viewer of the Conjuring movies, I went into the movie expecting to be lost in the story and plot. Thus when I watched the movie I was surprised by how easy the story was to follow. Though I wondered: was it truly worth the watch for newcomers?

As someone who has never watched any of the conjuring movies leading up to the last rites, it definitely included supernatural horror elements but it also included a lot of sentiment which is something that I had never thought they would include in this franchise. I enjoyed the sentiment of family that they included specially with the main family the Warrens. I also appreciated the plot of Lorraine and Ed’s daughter being possessed by a demon. This was a big add on the sentimental part of the movie seeing how hard it was for Lorraine and Ed to fight the demon because in turn they would be hurting their own daughter.

Although I enjoyed the movie, I was honestly disappointed in the ending. For it being the last conjuring movie of the franchise I expected it to have an unmatchable ending but it did not meet my expectations. Again I heavily enjoyed the feelings and emotion of family that the movie contributed but after such an intense build up the end of the movie felt a bit rushed. If you are a fan and have watched the movies this ending might have satisfied you as it was supposed to be a bittersweet ending for long time fans, however as a newcomer in the franchise it didn’t leave such an impact on me.

Overall, The Conjuring: Last Rites was still a good movie. It was visually strong, emotional and creepy–but it did not fully satisfy my brain as I expected more for the ending.
