All About Rho Kappa

By Dayana Quezada, Staff Reporter

Rho Kappa, otherwise known as the National Social Studies Honor Society, run by both Ms.Shaw and Ms.Corral. Consists of about 36 members and focuses on social studies to help high school students learn about history as well as find out more about their future career.

Every month Rho Kappa members get assigned a project that is led by the president and vice president that consists of fundraising like First Friday, making bulletin boards, etc. This month they will be interviewing black teachers and highlighting them during homeroom slides for black heritage month as well as for women’s history month. These projects are done to help the society meet its goals of spreading history and current events.

Earlier this year Rho kappa included speech and debate in their society but it will be a separate organization next year. Speech and debate are completely different organizations. In speech and debate, you get to argue using the Lincold Douglas format, in speech, there are many different classifications of speech you can participate in, unlike Rho Kappa which focuses more on history.

Rho Kappa isn’t only about learning history but about building a community where you get to meet new people, and get excited to learn more about history. Rho Kappa isn’t just an organization it’s more than that, it’s another great way to find a pathway after college not only that but it includes benefits for yourself.  You get to go on field trips, it’s a great way to figure out what you’re interested in and it looks good in college applications.

Corral states that “Even if you are not interested in law, political science, or psychology still think about joining Rho Kappa because what Rho Kappa offers is so different than what other clubs have to offer it’s the fact that they focus on a lot on what’s happening in the world  today and how do we relate it to history.”

Rho Kappa is open to juniors and seniors only, applications will be open during February and March. Some of the requirements needed to join Rho kappa are having a 3.0 GPA in social studies in all 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade years, as well as a 3.0 GPA overall.
