On February 23, 2024 Migrations hosted the Poetry Slam at the KAC Dance Studio from 5 to 6:30pm where students got to share their original poems and listen to their peers share theirs.
Migrations is the club where students create an annual publication and organize monthly literary competitions to allow students to show and express their creativity. Everyone in this club worked hard in planning this event, especially Editors-in-chief Luis Lopez and Litzy Moreno. They delegated tasks throughout the team and ensured everyone was able to tape flyers around the school informing about the event and promote it on their social media. This year they had 23 contestants and held a 5 minute intermission in between where Senior Angel Carrizales played a beautiful song on the piano. While snacks were being sold outside of the KAC Dance Studio.
Sponsor Dr. Strong says, “The Poetry Slam is a tradition that has been held for five years with the exception of the pandemic year. It’s a fun way for students to share their creativity in front of family and friends.” There were many captivating stories shared by students which included poems about love, family and friendships. They were judged by KAC teachers, Ms. Santiago, Dr. Lopez Plaza, Mr. Guerra and Mr. Elder who followed a specific rubric evaluating them on voice and articulation, poem originality and overall performance.
Coming in first place was Senior Camryn Austin with her poem “Out of the B”, in second place Junior Leilani Rangel with her poem “What does love mean to you?” and last but not least 3rd place went to Senior Nelly Mercado with “Miedo de la Verdad”. They were able to captivate the audience with their incredible tone and powerful words that won the judges over.
All of Migrations wants to thank everyone who participated and attended this event!
